Naxos
Long beaches, historic mountain towns, verdant valleys, medieval towers, and mouthwatering regional products. Your vacation to Naxos, the Cyclades island with it all, will include all of these and more.
Island location

The island of Naxos
The old Portara, the enormous marble entrance that resembles the National Geographic emblem, and the view of the medieval castle above the town welcome you as you enter the harbor of Naxos. You may discover remote, unspoiled settlements inland, such as Tripodes, Filoti, Halki, and Apeiranthos, that beckon you to discover their splendor.
Naxos' infinite length of stunning sandy beaches will keep you perfectly content during your vacation if you're a sun worshipper. Additionally, you should not miss the two enormous kouri, or sculptures of young men, that are laying out in the open if you have any interest in antiquities or culture. It is understandable why Naxos is referred to be the island with everything, not only in the Cyclades but across Greece.
The Portara
The major town of Naxos is enhanced by remnants of several ancient civilizations. The most noticeable is the enormous Portara, which is all that's left of an enormous temple to Apollo that was never finished. There are additional facets to the legacy of the Venetians and Franks, who seized the Greek mainland and islands as loot from the Fourth Crusade. You will feel as though you have traveled back in time to the Middle Ages as you make your way up to the stronghold through the winding streets of the town's oldest section.
Culinary journey
Naxos will appeal to foodies. It is an undiscovered culinary gem because of its exceptional local goods. Try the Greek cheeses first, including kefalotiri, known as arseniko (male), and graviera (similar to gruyere). Second, get some fried potatoes, if possible. The island's potassium-rich sandy shale gives them an exceptional flavor and texture. You might end yourself ordering more for dessert since you like them so much! Have a glass of kitro, a liqueur made from citron (citrus medica) leaves, to finish your dinner. It comes in three different flavors: green, yellow, and clear.
Cretan village in the hills of Naxos
Among the Naxos mountain settlements, Apeiranthos, also known as T'Aperathou, is a gem. Its homes, cobblestone streets, dialects, customs, and everyday routines have remained mostly unchanged for more than a century. Greek is still spoken by the residents in the melodic dialect of their Cretan ancestors who came to the area long ago. They would undoubtedly have no problem identifying the two-story stone homes, arched arches, marble-flagged alleyways, and Venetian turrets. Enjoy a little of this pure civilization by taking a seat at one of the historic kafeneions (cafés).
