The island of Poros

Once upon a time, the island of Poros, a little gem in the Saronic Gulf, was created by the union of two small islands, Spheria and Kalavria. From Athens, you may take a quick hydrofoil or ferry to this location, which is favored by Henry Miller and Greek Nobel winner Giorgos Seferis.

Like a missing puzzle piece from the Peloponnese, Poros is just a short distance from the mainland. Visitors arrive and go across the water in small boats. There are charming tavernas, boat marinas, neoclassical buildings, a clock tower, pine-tree forests that stretch to the sea, calm, and relaxation as you land. Poros, one of the nicest islands near Athens, welcomes you to explore its wonderful simplicity on foot, by bicycle, or by boat.

Feel the vintage charm

Like seats in an amphitheater, Poros' neoclassical buildings rise up the hillside of the town. Sunset at the iconic clocktower

You can see the old clock tower in the center of Poros town from everywhere. Since 1927, every second has been counted, but the greatest time to go is at the end of the day, when you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking sunset.

The Temple of Poseidon

The remains of a Doric temple devoted to Poseidon, constructed of blue limestone in the sixth century BC, may be seen among the pine trees in the center of Poros. As a runaway, the orator Demosthenes came here and drank hemlock to terminate his life.
